Malaysiakini – A silver medal for Malaysia in the Beijing Olympic

Malaysiakini reported “China’s Lin Dan, in all his majesty, broke the hearts of 27 million Malaysians when he beat Lee Chong Wei for the Olympics gold medal in Beijing tonight.”

The most anticipated match ended with a disappointment over the lost of Lee Chong Wei who lost tamely (12-21, 8-21)to Lin Dan. Chong Wei was sluggish and slower compared to his previous matches. He was being controlled by Lin Dan and fail to tune in the faster pace of game. Lin Dan played a faster and aggressive than Chong Wei. Chong Wei, who was more defensive in the match opt to play a safer game by opting for a defensive game but unfortunately, Lin Dan was in superb form and nothing can stop him from taking the gold medal. A very impressive game from Lin Dan who lived up to his reputation as World Champion and now the Olympic Champion. I believe many Malaysia Bolehland Badminton fans are disappointed not because Chong Wei lost but how he lost tamely to Lin Dan. It might sounds unfair to Chong Wei as he had gave his best but yet people are expecting a better show from him.

On the positive side, Chong Wei had delivered the first medal after a 12 years wait. At one point, we wondered if Malaysia will come back empty handed again. At least for now, we have a silver medal. It is a good achievement for the national sport and it will certainly motivate the badminton players in Malaysia. We are proud of you Chong Wei and thanks for the contribution for the country.

So what’s next for BAM? The next Olympic (London 2012) is 4 years away but can we emulate the success of Lee Chong Wei? If we want to win a gold, we should plan how to groom and prepare more junior players to take over the seniors in the world badminton arena.

For the updates of the final events yesterday, Indonesia bag a gold in the men’s double defeating China’s Cai Yun and Fu Hai Feng. In the Mixed double event, Korean Lee Yong Dae and Lee Hyo Jung beat Indonesian Nova Widianto and Lilyana Natsir for the gold medal. To sum it all, China took 3 gold medals from (LS Zhang Ning, LD Du Jing/ Yu Yang and MS Lin Dan), Indonesia 1 gold medal (Markis Kido and Setiawan), and Korea 1 gold medal (MXD Lee Yong Dae/ Lee Hyo Jung).
